Future-Time Reference in Truth-Conditional Pragmatics

چکیده
In capturing future-time reference, semantic theory such as DRT (Kamp & Reyle 1993) relies on the representation of tense and hence has a difficulty with reconciling the reference of the temporal adverbial and the tense in (3) and (4). In order to capture the futurity of ‘plays’ and ‘is playing’ (traditionally called ‘tenseless future’ and ‘futurative progressive’ respectively), I propose to use a truth-conditional pragmatic account (e.g. Recanati 2003) in which truth value is predicated of an utterance, or what is said by the speaker. In other words, in order to capture the temporal reference of (3) and (4), we proceed through what is said and assume a theory of meaning that allows for a pragmatic intrusion to the truth-conditional content. We obtain a representation of the speaker’s meaning to which various sources of information about meaning contribute. This can be contrasted with DRSs of DRT which rely closely on representing tenses, as they are founded on the output of syntactic processing (‘triggering configuration’):

Is There a Place for Truth-Conditional Pragmatics?
Truth-Conditional Pragmatics is the view that the meaning of the sentence in an utterance does not alone yield a truth-conditional content (even after disambiguation and reference fixing); that meaning can be pragmatically supplemented in indefinitely many ways yielding indefinitely many truth conditions. Recanati urges a version of this doctrine. I argue that the prospects for the doctrine are...

In a recent, welcome contribution, Predelli (2013) presents a fruitful and powerful framework on how truth-conditional semantics can deal with non-truth-conditional meaning. One of the gifts of Predelli’s contribution is that it presents a unifying theory dealing with seemingly various phenomena often relegated to the pragmatics dustbin. Thus, nicknames, slurs, answering machines/post-its, voca...
متن کاملMeaning and Use
This paper deals with the meaning of natural language expressions, and how meanings of expressions are used in communication. The two disciplines that talk most about meanings of expressions are linguistics (semantics and pragmatics) and philosophy. This paper is about topics discussed in both disciplines. The first part of the paper is more philosophical in nature and discusses what is meaning...
متن کاملDecisionmaking : Applications to Non - Truth - Conditional
Compressed Abstract: This paper submits an approach to broadly non-truth-conditional aspects of meaning in natural language which interprets`pragmatics' substantively: in the way of C.S. Peirce and F.P. Ramsey, as a synonym for decision-theory. We outline (i) basic assumptions, (ii) some relations to other approaches, (iii) a range of results wide enough to justify the termàpproach'. A key noti...
